Summerlea Development

The Summerlea Development Project is a thoughtfully planned mixed-form residential development located in the established Summerlea neighbourhood in northwest Edmonton. The project is being advanced through a unique Indigenous-led collaboration between the Chiniki First Nation and the Treaty Six Confederacy, and represents a strong example of economic reconciliation in action—pairing Indigenous ownership and leadership with professional development expertise to deliver much-needed housing in a mature urban context.

The development is envisioned as a mixed townhouse and mid-rise apartment community, delivering approximately 188 residential units. The unit mix is designed to support a diverse range of households, including families, seniors, working professionals, and individuals seeking long-term rental housing.

A City-Endorsed Housing Initiative

The Summerlea Development Project was awarded through the City of Edmonton’s Surplus School Sites Program, a municipal initiative designed to repurpose underutilized former school lands for community-serving uses, with a strong emphasis on housing. Through a competitive selection process, the City identified this project as a strong fit for the program’s objectives, recognizing its ability to deliver much-needed residential density in a mature neighbourhood while advancing affordability, thoughtful urban design, and long-term community benefit. The selection reflects the City of Edmonton’s confidence in the project team’s capacity to responsibly redevelop surplus public land into a high-quality, inclusive housing development that aligns with municipal planning priorities and broader housing strategy goals.
